How Can We Determin God's Will For Our Lives

This is a question that has been mind boggling for years. The biggest one "What Is God's Will For Us" Everyone has wondered about this and probably still do. I know I wonder about this myself.
For an example, I have a love for music before I was ever led by God I had a dream to go to California where the music industry is. I had plans on finding a job and a band. Over some time I saw God reverse what I wanted to do.
Not that God did not want me to play music I was seeking non Christian bands. God gave me a love for Christian music and gave me the talent to write lyrics. Wow this was great I thought to myself. I am actually going to do something I loved and get paid for it.
Next thing I know it never happened I had a Christian band and 2 yrs later it fell apart. The whole point to this story is when you think God wants you to do something and he gives you the talent for it maybe he wants you it for something else.
I don't think anyone knows what Gods will is until it happens. I personally think God has many wills for us. Life will always change God will always want us to do something else, new challenges, new trials, new tests, new missions and ext.... their are many other things in my life I can talk about on what I thought God's will was.
These are some of the examples I have gone through. My personal advice is to stick with prayer and listen to his voice.
